You have probably heard about affirmations and may have even tried saying a few of your own. But so many people, including myself, haven’t really thought about the true meaning behind why affirmations are so powerful. In this week’s blog, I discuss what affirmations are, why they are so important, and how you can incorporate affirmation into your daily life!
What Are Affirmations?
According to the dictionary, an affirmation is “the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed.” Ok…that’s not really telling me much. However, the second definition is what intrigued me. Affirmations can also mean “emotional support or encouragement.”
Affirmations are words or statements that one can repeat to really solidify a desired outcome. They typically begin with “I am…” or “I affirm that…” For example, if the desired outcome is to be brave, then you could repeat the affirmation “I am brave.” Let’s say you were nervous before a big presentation. You could repeat “I am brave” over and over again, imprinting this positive thought in your brain and negating out all the fears and negative beliefs. Pretty soon, your nerves disappear, your mind and body relax, and you walk to the front of the room filled with confidence and courage.
Affirmations as Meditation
Affirmations are also used as a form of meditation. Repeating affirmations can get your mind off something that is bothering you or preventing you from taking action. They allow you to be in the moment and focus on a positive thought. Each positive thought cancels out a negative thought, right? So, if you just repeat these positive affirmations, then you are essentially saying to your brain, “Ego, step aside. There’s a new sheriff in town called positivity and truth!”
This is a beautiful form of meditation, especially if you have a hard time clearing your mind and being in the moment. Repeating mantras not only boost positive energy but help your mind and body to completely relax and move into a healing, meditative state.
Promoting Healing. Repeating affirmations can also have a meditative effect on the brain from a physical standpoint. You can move your brain into a theta state, which is a very relaxed, almost trance-like state. It is in this state that true, deep healing occurs. This is the science behind the effectiveness of sound healing. Certain sounds played at certain frequencies cause your brain to move into this very calm, relaxed, and peaceful state so that energy blockages can be cleared, and positive energy is restored.
The Power of Your Own Voice. Your voice is one of the most powerful instruments available and it’s right there within your own body! You can sing affirmations if that resonates with you. You can try different tones for different words. You can say all the words with just one tone. No matter how you repeat them, you are changing the pattern of your brainwaves and literally rewiring your brain to think more positively!
Mantras. A mantra, which can be seen as a form of affirmation, is “a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation.” You have probably heard chanting of the word “Om” during a yoga class or guided meditation. Repeating mantras is an ancient practice and has deep spiritual roots in Hinduism and Buddhism. Behind each mantra lies a specific vibration that invokes a certain energy when spoken or chanted. Using the “Om” example, when you repeat this mantra you are invoking the connection to your entire being – mind, body, and spirit.
Malas & Mantras. Mantras are often repeated using malas. Malas always remind me of rosaries in the Catholic faith. But instead of saying prayers, you say a different mantra for each bead of the mala. So you might chant “Om” for each of the 108 beads on a mala to help you connect to Source, your True Self, or the Universe.
Why are Affirmations So Powerful?
If you think about affirmations as being forms of emotional support and encouragement, then the act of repeating these statements provides you with the boost of confidence, love, and support you need to get through a difficult situation or challenging time in your life.
But the really fascinating part about affirmations, is they affirm what you already know lies within you. This is the distinction I discovered in my meditation today with my spiritual support group of guides, ascended masters, and Council of Light that I personally resonated with and have been seeking for a long time. This is the piece that really connected the dots for me when it comes to why affirmations are so powerful.
If you tie these two pieces together – affirmations as emotional support and encouragement and affirming what you already know lies within you – then you are essentially tapping into your own light to remind yourself of who you truly are and encouraging yourself to reclaim the gifts you already have. Wow! What a simple yet extremely powerful form of self-healing!
Affirmations Are Truth. My guides shared with me this is why “I Am” statements are so powerful - because they are truth. Affirmations are reminders of your TRUE self. When we are born into a lifetime on Earth, we don’t come with the memory of Source or God or where we came from. We are created pure and have to learn from experience. Because of this, you have to be reminded of these qualities and truths.
By repeating these affirmations, you are reminded of your beautiful innate soul gifts that are YOU. You ARE brave. You ARE powerful. You ARE loved. These are all given truths that we know in Spirit but have to remember here on Earth. Saying affirmations taps into those truths and helps us connect back to our Inner Light and Source.
Affirmations for Manifesting
This understanding of using affirmations to remember who we truly are is also the concept behind manifesting. I have been meditating on this topic for some time now. Why do some people manifest better than others? So much of this comes down to believing we are worthy of receiving. But as previously mentioned, in Spirit we don’t have these issues. We don’t question things like, “Am I worthy to receive this?” because we know we ARE! Not only are we worthy, but we are whatever we want to manifest.
For example, if you want to manifest more love, repeating the affirmation “I Am Loved” assumes that you already are loved. And the truth is, you ARE loved so you shall receive! It is to be expected that you receive love because you are loved. But when the ego creeps in and starts putting doubts and false beliefs into your mind, such as “I am not worthy”, then that blocks the love from manifesting and coming in.
Saying affirmations prevents the ego from taking over because they are your truth and come from your True Self. Your ego is not your truth. Your light will always win. No matter what. Which is why saying affirmations are so powerful. It’s completely changing your mindset. Even if you don’t really believe it in the beginning, the more you say it, the more you will start to feel it, and the more you feel it, the more you will begin to believe it. It just becomes second nature.
How to Incorporate Affirmations into Your Daily Life
You might be wondering, “How do I know which affirmations to use?” Think of something you are struggling with – a fear, doubt, or negative thought – and turn it into a positive using an “I Am” statement. You can have fun and be creative with this!
For example, if you want to be reminded of your power, you can state, I Am a Beautiful Goddess!
Let’s say you want to manifest the dream of starting your own business. You can say I Am An Entrepreneurial Genius!
If you want to find more inspiration, you could say, I Create Magic & Miracles Every Day!
A couple that I am currently working with are:
I Believe in Myself
I Am Pure Light
I Am Strong
You can insert anything you wish in your statement.
Just say it with gusto! Say it with pride! Say it with conviction!
Write Them Out. Really sign, seal, and deliver this power and remind yourself of your truth by writing your affirmations on a sticky note and taping it to your computer or mirror. Make it one of your passwords. Make it your computer screen background or the background photo on your phone. Write it over and over again in your journal.
Speak Them Out. Wake up every morning and start your day off on a positive note by repeating your affirmation or mantra 3 times. Practice meditating by chanting your mantra or affirmation. Sing your affirmations in the shower! Use a mala if you have one or just sit in the sun and close your eyes for a few minutes and repeat your mantra.
Have Fun with Affirmations!
However you choose to incorporate affirmations in your day, just remember to have fun with it! Play with it. Explore. Try new things. Keep it light and positive! See which ones resonate and which ones don’t. Repeat “I Am my Inner Child” and then ask what your light needs to remember that day.
Use affirmations to remind yourself how amazing you are and that YOU have the power to heal your own self and raise your vibration with just one simple statement!
You ARE that powerful!
