When I checked in with my guides to see what we all needed to know this week, I heard that we all need to find more joy in our lives. I keep receiving this message, not only for myself but for my clients as well. With everything going on in the world, it can be difficult to think about joy, much less try to find it every day. There’s so much heaviness and dense energy in the air right now. It’s easy to get weighed down, making it difficult to see the true beauty and joy in life, especially during a time of crisis and uncertainty.
I felt this was a good topic to focus on, because although I hear the message, I know many of us, myself included, are having a hard time trying to figure out how to incorporate more joy into our lives. I connected with my guides to share some ideas on how we can rise above all the heaviness and bring back positivity and joy into our lives.
Why is Joy So Important Right Now?
When you experience joy, you are connecting to your inner child, which is your true, Divine self. Think about when you were a child and new to this world. You didn’t know anything except your own heart, imagination, and pure view of the world. That’s because you came directly from Source, and your ego-mind wasn’t fully developed yet. It didn’t have the ability to take over your intuition and true self yet. This connection to Source is your TRUE nature.
The Ego Vs. the True Self. But as you reached adulthood and your ego-mind became fully developed, you started moving farther and farther away from Source. Your ego-mind makes you question your faith, doubt your abilities, and fear the unknown. The ego has its purpose but reacts more to external environmental factors versus going inward to seek the real truth.
For example, the fight or flight response serves to protect us from danger. This was highly developed back when humans were first created on this planet and had to solely rely on these senses to survive. Today, we still need our fight or flight response but not as intensely. This response can cause unnecessary fear and overreaction to any stressor, no matter how big or small. The result is constant anxiety, an exhausted adrenal system, and an inability to connect with your true self and soul because you are so consumed with this high-alert, panic feeling.
Reconnecting Back to Source. This physical experience you are having can easily disconnect you from your true self and Source. But the TRUTH is that although you are living in this physical body having a physical experience on this planet, you are a beautiful soul still highly connected to Source. You can reconnect that direct line to Source when you tap into your inner child.
You are meant to live a happy and fulfilling life, even during difficult times. When you are connected to your spirituality, you have a greater understanding of the higher purpose of certain events, people, and situations in your life and the world. This can bring you comfort and healing and allow you to find joy even in the most challenging of situations. When you tap into your inner child, you tap into your spirituality. And when you tap into your spirituality, you experience what true joy feels like. And the best part of all is there is a never-ending supply of joy from this well! You can tap into this any time you like!
The Benefits of Joy Are Endless. Finding joy is not only beneficial to your spirit, but it helps your physical body as well. Doing things that bring you joy reduces stress, anxiety, blood pressure, calms the nervous system, increases serotonin production in your brain, and boosts immunity. Joy brings balance to your entire mind, body, and spirit!
Ways to Let Your Inner Child Roam Free!
Another main message or theme for this year that I have heard consistently from my guides is simplicity is key. Think back to simpler times. Think of all the things you did as a kid that you loved, that made you laugh, and that brought you satisfying entertainment for hours on end.
Depending on your generation, what fun activities you did as a child are going to be different. But I have included some ideas below on how you can bring back those simpler times and find joy in even the simplest of activities!
Spend Time with Animals. Animals are such simple and loving creatures. If you have pets of your own, spend more time playing with them. Feel how sharing this joy really bonds you with your animal. If you don’t have any pets of your own, play with a friend’s pet, maybe visit a zoo, or volunteer at an animal shelter or non-profit organization. Animals have the purest of hearts and are very healing. They are our great teachers on how to live simply through unconditional love, joy through play, and knowing when to rest and recharge.
Be One with Nature. Like animals, nature is our great teacher as well. Nature reminds us to slow down and breathe the fresh air. Think back to when you were a kid. You probably played mostly outdoors. I remember exploring down by the creek or playing at the park by my neighborhood. Maybe you loved riding your bike everywhere or going to the local swimming pool. Chances are most of the activities you loved doing as a kid were outdoors. As children, we have this innate sense of the freedom that comes with being out in nature.
Get Creative. As a kid, I loved art class or the projects where we got to create or build. I remember these projects both in school and at home with family. Think about the types of arts and crafts projects you loved most as a kid and bring them back into your life! It doesn’t matter if you feel childish or silly. That’s the point! Let down your guard and just play!
Play with Playdough. You can find recipes online on how to make your own with all-natural ingredients!
Play with Lincoln Logs. I used to love these as a child!
Color in a Coloring Book. These are making a comeback. You can find adult coloring books
Draw using an Etch A Sketch
Make designs with a Lite-Bright
Paint or Draw. Really get in there and paint with your fingers if you like! I recently started a Paint by Numbers project which is nice is you don’t know what to paint from scratch.
Create something with paper mache.
Paint a Piece of Pottery. I used to love going to birthday parties where we picked out a piece of pottery and painted it.
Create a Vision Board like you did when you were a teenager. Cut out pictures from magazines of things you love or wish to bring into your life.
DIY Projects. Create your own bath salts or face mask using ingredients in your pantry. Make your own ornaments for your Christmas tree or give them out as gifts this year.
Write. Write a short story, play, fiction, memoir, children’s book, etc. Better yet, get the family together to act out your play or story! My friend and I used to love to act out movies or create our own plays.
Create Your Own Recipe. If you enjoy cooking, maybe try creating your own recipe and cooking it. If it’s a winner, share it on social media!
Bust Out Those Old Board Games. Which board games did you love playing as a kid? I loved Chutes & Ladders, Operation, Candy Land, Trivial Pursuit, 20 Questions, and Monopoly. Other games such as Charades and Pictionary are fun too. And you can play these with friends and family over Zoom!
Watch Movies or Shows You Used to Love. I will be the first to admit I love me some true crime! However, sometimes I just want good, clean fun! So, I watch shows such as Gilmore Girls or Dawson’s Creek or movies such as The Goonies. Watching wholesome shows can bring comfort and joy!
Connect with Loved Ones the Old-Fashioned Way. Again, reverting back to simpler times. How did you express your love for someone before computers and the internet?
Write a Love Letter. Write your partner or crush a hand-written love letter or poem and put it on their pillow or mail it to them.
Pass a Note to Your Spouse or Partner. Since many people are working from home right now, write a note and slip it under your partner’s door. Be sure to end it with a question so they can write you back!
Ask a Friend to be a Pen Pal. I used to be Pen Pals with my cousin who lived in another state when I was little. Connect with a friend or family member you don’t talk to as much anymore and start writing hand-written letters to each other.
Make Someone a Mixed Tape. This used to be the ultimate way of expressing your love for someone when I was younger. There’s nothing more romantic than sending someone songs that remind you of them. Nowadays, you could make a Spotify playlist for someone!
Send Someone a Care Package. Let someone know you are thinking of them by sending them a care package of their favorite items such as food, candy, candles, bath products, etc.
Reconnect with a Friend from Your Childhood. Give your friend a call and reminisce about the times you shared when you were young.
Dance, Dance, Dance! Put on your favorite music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, early 2000s, or whichever decade you loved best, and dance like no one is watching! You know you still know Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance by heart!
“Camp” in Your Living Room or Backyard. I used to love building a fort in our living room out of chairs and sheets when I was little. Or dust off the old tent and camp in your own backyard under the stars!
Play Your Childhood Sport. Try getting back into the sport you used to play as a kid. I recently started up ballet again which has been so much fun! You don’t have to be in a competitive league either. You could just bounce the soccer ball around or shoot some hoops at the park.
There is Always Light to Be Found
Thinking of playing Trivial Pursuit brings back memories of my dad. He was the King of Trivial Pursuit! Although he passed away, this memory of him makes me happy and keeps his spirit alive. Even in the darkest of times, there is always light and joy to be found.
All I Want for Christmas is Joy!
With the holidays just around the corner, this is such a great time to bring back your inner child. If you are in a place where it snows, go sledding or make some snow angels. Cut down your own Christmas tree. Make cookies with your family. Relive some of those fond memories of childhood!
Choose Joy
Writing this blog brings me so much joy! Just the thought of remembering all the things I used to love to do as a kid is making me happy and putting a smile on my face. For your next journal entry, write down all the childhood activities that brought you the most joy. How can you implement these activities to let your inner child come out and play and invite more joy into your life? It doesn’t matter what you do, just remember to always choose joy.
It’s Show & Tell Time!
